Johansson also deserves a lot of credit for her performance. Another plus for the film is that it has some stylish gunfights including one between the mobsters and the police towards the end. The action scenes are all extremely well-directed and there's no doubt that the frantic chase through the streets are exciting and full of imagination. Besson has always known how to structure an action scene and he certainly brings a lot of flair and style here. I'm still a little confused as to why Lucy didn't die of a drug overdose but, again, logic isn't going to be your best friend in a picture like this so it's best just to sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the various visual styles and performances. LUCY is certainly director Luc Besson's best film in a very long time but I must admit that I think it's best that you turn your brain off right at the start of the picture. The bag of drugs is planted inside her body but when it breaks open it begins to give her full access to her brain's power and soon she's a deadly machine. Lucy (2014) *** (out of 4) Bizarre but entertaining action film about a young woman named Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) who finds herself being forced to carry a new form of a synthetic drug for a ruthless kingpin. As with UNDER THE SKIN, Johansson proves herself an actress willing to accept more outre parts, which is to be commended. The ending threatens to become overwhelmed in CGI but the film as a whole remains fun and the likes of Morgan Freeman bring gravitas and believability to their parts. Once the sci-fi twists kick in it takes a while for the viewer to acknowledge the change in genre, but from that point it remains philosophical and engaging. The early thriller aspects of the story are handled very well with a ton of suspense. Generally this is an enjoyable film that feels fresh and inventive. It's much like LIMITLESS in that respect. Jang (a delightful western role for the fine Korean actor Choi Min-sik), but most of all this is an exploration of the human mind and what it's ultimately capable of. There are some clumsy thriller elements in the story, namely those including the sinister criminal Mr. It's more of a thinking person's science fiction film. This is something of a mixed bag of a film which was missold by the trailers and advertising as an action thriller. The convoluted storyline sees everyday Scarlett Johansson accidentally exposed to a new wonder drug which opens up her brain to a much higher percentage and subsequently changes her life in a very big way. LUCY is a French action film that explores the popular concept (some might say misconception) that the human race only utilises 10% of the power of the brain.
